Signs of a female dog in heat

Female dog normally goes into heat once every 6 months and occasionally one will be skipped. For smaller dog breed, it will occur after they are 6 months old and  it will occur later for larger breed.
There are 2 stages when your dog is in heat.
The early stage
  • Start the day you notice bloody discharge
  • Last around 7-10 days
  • Your female dog is not ready to mate yet
The 8 main signs of a dog in the early stage of being in heat
  1. Change in temperament  – Appear jittery, always on high alert, easily agitated due to elevated level of hormones
  2. May urinate more than usual
  3. Swollen vulva
  4. Slightly swollen nipple
  5. Blood-tinged discharge – The amount of discharge varies among all dog
  6. Licking her vulva more frequently
  7. Tuck her tail especially when around other dogs to protect herself as she is not ready to mate
  8. Funky smell
The later stage
  • Last around 5-14 days
  • Ready to mate
  • Fertile
The 2 main signs of a dog in the later stage of being in heat
  • More brownish discharge
  • Approaching other male dogs and raise her behind to initiate sexual interaction

Signs of dog pregnancy

7-10 days after they start to be  in heat , female dog enters the later stage which she can get pregnant. This stage usually lasts around 5-14 days. If your dog has come in contact with male dog during that period of time. do look out for signs of pregnancy to avoid surprises.
