Signs of a female dog in heat
Female dog normally goes into heat once every 6 months and occasionally one will be skipped. For smaller dog breed, it will occur after they are 6 months old and it will occur later for larger breed.
There are 2 stages when your dog is in heat.
The early stage
- Start the day you notice bloody discharge
- Last around 7-10 days
- Your female dog is not ready to mate yet
The 8 main signs of a dog in the early stage of being in heat
- Change in temperament – Appear jittery, always on high alert, easily agitated due to elevated level of hormones
- May urinate more than usual
- Swollen vulva
- Slightly swollen nipple
- Blood-tinged discharge – The amount of discharge varies among all dog
- Licking her vulva more frequently
- Tuck her tail especially when around other dogs to protect herself as she is not ready to mate
- Funky smell
The later stage
- Last around 5-14 days
- Ready to mate
- Fertile
The 2 main signs of a dog in the later stage of being in heat
- More brownish discharge
- Approaching other male dogs and raise her behind to initiate sexual interaction
